Greening Artistic Residencies Guide (Focus on Creative Europe Countries)

On the Move’s 2025 Cultural Mobility Funding Guide focuses on ‘green artistic residencies’ in Creative Europe countries.

This new Cultural Mobility Funding Guide by On the Move is designed to support both artists and cultural organisations at different stages of their creative work. Its main goal is to help readers find funding opportunities for green artistic residencies. Through clear articles and case studies, it also offers culture professionals, residency managers, artists and other stakeholders practical ideas, reflections and guidance on how to make residencies more environmentally friendly—whether in themes, artistic work, venues, local connections or travel.

The guide is part of On the Move’s recent effort to explore topics from a broader international perspective. The guide focuses on ‘green artistic residencies’ in Creative Europe countries. This theme was chosen because residencies make up one of the largest types of opportunities on the website (nearly 50% of all open calls in 2024), and sustainability and the environment are also major themes (13.8% of calls in 2024).

The Guide at a Glance

  • A selection of organisations and initiatives that have offered funding opportunities over the past five years, identified through On the Move’s database. These examples can help you find support for your own (green) mobility, or inspire you as a residency manager or cultural professional.
  • In-depth articles on various ways to address the challenge of greening artistic residencies. Each article concludes with key takeaways, covering topics such as definitions, sustainable practices, island connections, and the role of networks.
  • Practical case studies: one focused on Slovenia, one based on the RES ARTIS database covering multiple countries, and one centred on experiments with more sustainable travel.

Residency organisations can use the examples and case studies as inspiration for programme design, practical steps toward greening their spaces, and references to good practices. Artists can explore the guide to discover green residency opportunities and projects.
